The Alchemist : A Review

“We are travellers on a cosmic journey, stardust, swirling and dancing in the eddies and whirlpools of infinity. Life is eternal. We have stopped for a moment to encounter each other, to meet, to love, to share. This is a precious moment. It is a little parenthesis in eternity.”

The Alchemist is an art, indeed a bestseller by the famous Brazilian writer Paulo Coelho. The Story begins as a young shepherd named Santiago is troubled by a recurring dream about getting some treasure in the base of Egyptian Pyramids. The book describes various lessons he learnt along the way to find the hidden treasure. He meets several people in his journey who teach him what life is.

“And when you want something, all the universe conspires in helping you achieve it”.This has always been true in the context of life. Anything we want, literally anything, if we have desire to achieve it and work for it, then we get help of the universe in every form. Along the way the shepherd learns to listen to his heart always and also realises that his dreams not only belong to him but also a part of the universe. He sacrifices his sheep, takes pain in every form to reach his destiny.

Dream is the language of universe.Everyone when they are young know what their destiny is.At that stage in life they are clear of everything they want to become and they are confident about it.They never hesitate to dream. But as time passes by their comes a mysterious force that blocks their vision. They are themselves unable to achieve their destiny .And they end up believing that the world’s a greatest lie.In the book, answering to the boys’s question about the greatest lie in the world the old man said “It’s it that at a certain point in our lives we lose control of what’s happening to us, and our lives become controlled by fate.”

As the story continues a young woman appraoches and the boys asks her about the alchemist. At that moment it seemed to him that time stood still, and the soul of the world surged with him.He learned the most important part of the language that all the world spoke-the language that everyone on the Earth was capable of understanding with their heart. It was love.Something older than humanity, more ancient than the desert. It was the pure Language of the World. It required no explanation, just as the universe needs none as it travels through endless time. What the boy felt at that moment was that he was in the presence of the only woman in his life, and that, with no need for words, she recognised the same thing. He was more certain of it than of anything in the world. He had been told by his parents and grandparents that he must fall in love and really know a person before becoming committed. But maybe people who felt that way had never learned the universal language. Because, when you know that language, it’s easy to understand that someone in the world awaits you, whether it’s in the middle of the desert or in some great city. And when two such people encounter each other, and their eyes meet, the past and the future become unimportant. There is only that moment, and the incredible certainty that everything under the sun has been written by one hand only. It is the hand that evokes love, and creates a twin soul for every person in the world. Without such love, one’s dreams would have no meaning.

Don’t think about what you’ve left behind” The alchemist said to the boy as they began to ride across the sands of the desert. “If what one finds is made of pure matter, it will never spoil. And one can always come back. If what you had found was only a moment of light, like the explosion of a star, you would find nothing on your return.

Along the way through the deserts the alchemist also said”What you still need to know is this: Before a dream is realised, the soul of the world tests everything that was learned along the way.It does no do so because it is evil, but so that we can, in addition to realising our dreams, master the lessons we have learned as we have moved towards the dream. That’s the point where most people give up.”.

And yes, finally Santiago finds the treasure. The lesson that the book teaches through a shepherd’s life is necessary for every indiviual to learn in life.
